Professor Jim Hall is now fellow of the Royal Society.

We are delighted to congratulate Professor Jim Hall — Director of the Oxford Programme for Sustainable Infrastructure Systems (OPSIS), Professor of Climate and Environmental Risks at the University of Oxford, and a key contributor to the MIRACA project — on his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS).

This prestigious lifetime honour is one of the highest recognitions in science, awarded to individuals who have made substantial contributions to the advancement of natural knowledge. Professor Hall joins a remarkable cohort of scientists, engineers, and researchers whose work has helped shape our understanding of the world and how we navigate its most pressing challenges.

Within MIRACA, Professor Hall’s expertise in systemic risk, infrastructure resilience, and climate adaptation has been instrumental in advancing our shared mission: making complex, cascading risks more visible and actionable. His leadership in developing tools such as the Systemic Risk Assessment Tool (SRAT) and the PortWatch platform reflects the type of applied, interdisciplinary science that underpins MIRACA’s collaborative approach to risk governance and resilience-building.

On the announcement of the award, Professor Hall shared:

“This honour reflects the enormous contributions from my research group and all of the people with whom I’ve collaborated during my career. Science is a team endeavour, and I’ve been very fortunate to work with brilliant and inspiring people. I’d particularly like to recognise the hard work of many PhD students and researchers who I’ve supervised over the years, and the continued dedication of my team in the Oxford Programme for Sustainable Infrastructure Systems. We have many great challenges that we are working on now and aim to solve in the future.”

His election to the Royal Society is not only a recognition of a remarkable career but also a celebration of the collaborative, impact-driven science that MIRACA seeks to foster. Professor Hall’s contributions continue to inspire our efforts to understand systemic risk and to inform more just, resilient, and sustainable responses across scales.

From all of us at MIRACA: Congratulations, Jim, and thank you for your continued leadership.
